Represented in this painting (named for a famous Mexican provincial town) are the days when the sky turns red as the sun sets. It seems sometimes almost like a show, but few people seem to really appreciate the beauty of such a phenomenon.

It invokes memories on the edge of Guadalupe’s experience in a small Mexican village, when he went all day to work in the fields, and walked home on such evenings as darkness fell, a 2½ hour trek in the middle of nowhere, carrying wood on his back for the family fuel. The spectacle of such an evening had the power to turn an arduous task into a memorable moment.
