African Face 2

Oil on Canvas, 2001

45cm x 60cm

This was painted whilst Guadalupe was living in Feltham, in West London, and incorporates Aztec colours into an African-style visage.

In this painting, Guadalupe is trying to explore the issue of the many countries who influenced other cultures, such as the African element in the culture of the Carribean and many parts of Latin America, from when Africans were taken as slaves to the New World.

The face, with its large mouth and prominent teeth, is reminiscent of the many Africans sent to America as slaves, who, despite the harshness of their destiny, helped to shape the diverse culture of nations such as Brazil and many Caribbean countries with their colourful traditions.

It combines bright colours, and features with large proportions. The hair is thick and colourful, reflecting the African style in Latin American culture, and its relationship in music, tradition and ceremonies.
