Brazil's Development

Oil on Canvas, Rochester, 2003

114cm x 100cm

The structure of this picture is meant to represent development in some areas of Brazil, with the dark shapes signifying where corruption is rising. The other parts represent popular issues such as fashion, industrial design, architecture, carnival and football.

All the round and square shapes together form a modern city, in an impoverished state. Brazil is full of many cultures, and the poverty reflected in their picture represents the unknown journey of those struggling to survive. The shapes are an invitation to discover the new world on the other side, which has something for us. In these shapes, you would see people standing, as the architecture is making the cities of Brazil popular with mass consumerism. Even in the rain forest, there is now a place where you can open a door.
