Blue Deer

Oil on Paper, 2002

This figure was inspired by Franz Marc, famous for his paintings of animals in bright colours. The green of the forest image evokes Guadalupe's early life in the village. At that time, he was unable to draw or paint, but he still imagined in his mind alternative ways of seeing animals.

Guadalupe often came across animals such as this in the village, but only later came to understand how they could feel scared, sense what was coming and try to avoid human beings. He says: "The deer is a wonderful animal, and I wonder why people kill them. I love its beautiful shape and powerful sculpted muscles."
