Sound

Oil on Canvas, Martock, Somerset, 1999

25cm x 36cm

Sound was painted when Guadalupe was living in the Somerset countryside. The idea came to him when he was feeling alone and isolated in his early days in England, not long after leaving Mexico City.

He imagined all the traffic in the large cities of the world, and saw in his mind crowds of people running in different directions, carrying on with their busy urban lives. This was part of his memory on feeling nostalgic for his home city.

He comments, "Sound was the only thing that was travelling in my mind, when I remembered the good times I had in the city that saw me in solitude, in love, and without my parents. The shadowed faces mean that time is bringing back the good people that helped me when I was alone in the street, and the sounds of the different instruments represent my emotional problems."
